Play songs and build practical skills

Begin with holding and tuning the ukulele, changing between simple chords and keeping a steady rhythm. Put those skills together in familiar songs, with clear goals for practice between lessons.

As your playing develops, try new strumming patterns, single-note melodies and fingerpicking. Lessons can also include accompanying your singing, songwriting and the practical music theory that helps you understand what you are playing.

Colin singing and playing acoustic guitar during a live performance

Colin

Ukulele Teacher

Hi, I’m Colin! I’m an encouraging ukulele teacher with around 20 years of experience as a musician, teaching children from around age six, teenagers and adults.

Whether you’d like to play your favourite songs, accompany your singing, work towards grades or write your own music, we’ll shape lessons around your goals. Through music you love, we’ll develop chords, strumming, rhythm and fingerpicking, playing songs together as your skills grow.

My teaching experience includes classroom work up to A Level and supporting students with ADHD, autism and visual or hearing impairments. I’ll take time to understand how you learn and help you progress at your own pace.

As a live musician, I’ve explored styles from pop and rock to folk, blues and jazz. I love helping students reach that moment when something clicks: “I can do this!”

Musical interests: Pop, rock, acoustic, folk, blues, country, jazz and swing
Teaches: Children, teenagers and adults

Ukulele lesson questions

What age can children start?

Colin teaches children from around age six. Readiness varies, so tell us your child’s age and experience if you would like advice before booking.

Do I need my own ukulele?

You will need access to a suitable ukulele between lessons for practice. Our music shop can help with size, type and budget. Contact us before your trial if you need advice about what to bring.

Can I learn to sing and play together?

Yes. Lessons can include accompanying your singing, keeping a steady strum and coordinating chord changes with a song. You can also focus entirely on instrumental playing.

Do I need to read music?

No. You can begin with chord diagrams, rhythm patterns, tablature, listening and demonstrations. Traditional notation can be introduced where it supports your goals.

Can I work towards ukulele grades?

Where suitable, Colin can help you prepare for a recognised ukulele grade. Exams are optional; learning songs, writing music and playing for enjoyment are also welcome.
