What age can children start bass guitar lessons?
Many children can begin from around age seven or eight, depending on their size, concentration and the instrument available. Short-scale bass guitars can make starting much more comfortable for younger players, and we’re happy to advise before you buy.
Can I start bass as a complete beginner?
Absolutely. You don’t need to learn guitar first. We’ll show you how to hold and tune the bass, play your first notes and bass lines, and build good habits from the beginning.
Do I need my own bass guitar?
You’ll need access to a suitable bass between lessons so you can practise. Speak to us before buying one and our shop team can help you choose the right scale length, size and setup for your budget.
Do I need a bass amplifier at home?
You’ll need a small bass practice amplifier, headphone amplifier or suitable audio setup for home practice. A normal guitar amplifier is not designed for bass at useful volumes, so we can help you choose a sensible option.
Do I need to learn guitar before bass?
No. Bass is a complete instrument in its own right and can be your first instrument. Guitar experience can help, but it isn’t necessary.
Do you teach four-string and five-string bass?
Yes, where suitable. Most beginners start on a four-string bass because it keeps things straightforward, but lessons can also cover five-string bass and its extended lower range.
What styles of bass can I learn?
Lessons can cover rock, pop, indie, funk, soul, blues, reggae, metal, punk and more. Tell us what you enjoy listening to and we’ll shape your lessons around it.
Do I need to read music?
No. Bassists often learn using tablature, chord charts, listening and demonstration. Traditional notation can also be taught where it is useful or relevant to your goals.
Can I take graded bass guitar exams?
Yes. Your teacher can help you prepare for recognised bass or rock and pop grades where appropriate. Exams are optional and never compulsory.
How much should I practise?
Regular short sessions are usually more effective than one long weekly session. Your teacher will suggest realistic practice goals based on your age, experience and available time.
